cbeyond and joomla 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 1
I think that this may be a rare match up but I have been able to get a joomla site up and running on a Cbeyond server.

Cbeyond provides voice and data services to small businesses. I would reccomend them for T1 access but not for website hosting. You can only get one mysql database and they have register_globals turned on. I may set up a web monitor and we can see how good their uptime is.

Any way one of my clients needed their site to run on one of the Cbeyond servers. It took a bit of figuring out but I was able to get it all set up.

If anyone needs help getting Joomla to run on a Cbeyond server let me know and I will be happy to help out.

After trying every work-around possible I was able to install Joomla on my client's CBeyond server. Installing the Joomla files on the server's root was the easiest part...it was populating and connecting Joomla to the database that was the hardest part.

It was an all day thing...I spent hours on the phone with their so-called (didn't even know what MySQL was) tech support guys and finally came to find out that the IP address of the live site is the address of the MySQL server and that 'localhost' will not work.

I was also able to get into PHPAdmin to do all of the database tweaking by going to http://mysites.IP.address/phpadmin/

Try that out and see if it works for you.

The only problem that I am having to figure out now is that the server is so locked down, I can't install component, modules or plugins through the installer. I'm either going to have to install them manually or do the changes locally and then upload and rewrite.

All in all, I'd avoid this host at all cost...talk about a pain

Thanks for the reply!

I am glad to see I was not the only one with this issue. I had the same experience with Cbeyonds tech support. I actually think they use another company for their hosting services

Actually the client that I originally requested the Cbeyond hosting site moved from Cbeyond because their servers were just to slow. All of that work to see them move to another host. This actually made me happy because it meant everything else became easier in the future. Cbeyond was so difficult to work with.

In the past year I have one other client request a joomla install on cebeyond. I told them my hourly rate and then told them of the troubles I had with cbeyond and did the math for them. It became very apparent that if I spent an extra couple of hours on the install (due to the extra road blocks of cbeyond) it would be cheaper to go with a different hosting company.

If you are having trouble installing components, check all of the permissions, you probably done this. The apache user may be different than the FTP user you are using upload your files. I have seen this happen before.

Hope this helps and thanks again for the reply!

Thanks for the heads up...I was just about to try CHMOD'ing my folders and try that.

One of the countless other things that I couldn't stand about CBeyond is that you can't use SSH. Ugh.

As constrictive as a tight pair of underwear.

One of you mentioned that CBeyond probably uses another company to provide web hosting?

I'm not currently with CBeyond but our company is thinking of switching. This would be an important piece of information to take into account in our decision. Would anyone happen to know who CBeyond is partnered with for web hosting?

Thanks,
Andreas
