I need to start taking more precautions when backing up my data.

What about an online backup solution?

What about tape disk backup

Or an SAN

Hi CraigRobRunner,

Thanks for the post.

Backing up your data is a very important step. Think how much work you have done on your computer. The programs can be replaced, but what about your entire Music Collection or all of your word documents.

I have not heard of the backup solution you mentioned. Looks interesting.

Running tape back up solutions or SANS can be very expensive tens or thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Additionally you still do not have your data storage off site.

That is why I really like the online backup solutions. They are much cheaper but they happen automatically and routinely. Plus it is fairly easy to retrieve your data should you loose a file.

Hope this helps!

Probably the easiest way to backup is Mozy online backup. It's basically fire-and-forget backup since they maintain the servers.

If you don't mind doing a little work try BackupPC for Linux. It uses rsync to backup all the PCs on your LAN (including Windows boxes via Cygwin). A nice feature of it is that if two files are the same it only stores them once so it saves space.

Or you could just copy all your files to a 500GB USB HD. Only problem is what if the house burns down.

One of the replies mentions Mozy and I can second that recommendation. There are a lot of other online backup solutions out there that may fit your needs even better. I just started an online backup review site that takes a closer look at several backup solutions. Check it out at BackupSolutionsReview.com

How big is your website? There are any number of creative solutions out there. If your website was only a little 5 meg site you could easily have a script written to compress the site and email it to you every day. Or if it's too big for email you could sign up for a cheap secondary web host and have a similar script/program written to sftp or scp your site to that host. You could send it compressed to save a tiny bit of bandwidth but if the bandwidth is cheap you could send it all straight over and mirror your site in case of emergency.

You could even do this setup with several cheap hosts.

If you're up for managing the process manually simply download your website via ftp, compress it to a single file, save it to your computer, and for good measure also upload it to a service like yousendit. (you'd probably want a paid membership so files can stay on the server longer)

There are plenty of affordable solutions available.
