How to get the best online backup service. 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi all

I am a budding photographer, and I have Windows Vista Home Basic on my pc. What would be the best way for me to secure my files, and make sure I dont lose everything if my computer crashes? I have about 50 gb of data, and few video clippings also. My data mainly consists of my precious photographs that I clicked all thoroughout.

I was thinking about online backup. Will that be reliable? Please suggest few good options.

thanks in advance.

Thanks for the question.

50GB of data is a lot, not unheard of but a lot.

We are actually in the process of updating the online back up reviews section of the site.

A few questions:

How often does your data change?
Do you have any of your data archived? or organized by year.
Do you have a budget in mind?(can you spend more than $5/month)

A few thoughts depending on your answers:
If not all of the data is absolutely needed, the number of options will open as the volume stored reduces.

If you had to restore 50GB of data it will take a while. I know some of the business solutions will allow you to Ship them a drive, they will copy the data onto the drive and ship it back to you. Believe it or not this option could be faster than transferring 50GB of data accross the internet. iBackup will do this. Here is the iBackup Online backup review.

Let me know your answers and hopefully we can find a good solution for you.

Thanks!

File size should not be a problem actually as many leading online backup companies are providing unlimited data backup. You can also have a automatic scheduled backup. All these comes for a reasonable amount. I have heard about Mozy and Carbonite. Not sure about any other new players offering few additional new features. Can anyone recommend any new company on the basis of their own personal experience.

I have checked ibackup now, I dont see any free space that they are offering. I would first like to check the solution and then consider paying for it. Do you have any idea about a storage solution that provides with a free space so that I can use and check the application out?

Thanks for the reply.

I am just getting back into all of the online companies as I update our online backup reviews. I looked at all of the companies a few years ago and this is what I remember. I hope to have new reviews and updated features in the next few weeks.

I choose iBackup over a year ago and have been very happy with them. I only have about 10GB of data to protect, only about 20% of what you need to store.

iBackup was more of a business class and priced service. They were more expensive and had better options for accessing your backups.

Also if a file was deleted off your computer, they would not delete it from their backup the next time your files were synced. I think some of the other services would remove any files from backup that were no longer on your computer. This is a nice feature b/c if you accidentally delete a needed directory and then backup runs you still have access to the deleted files. I think with Mozy and Carbonite they would delete the files out of backup, if that makes sense.

I think iDrive is the lower priced service from iBackup. Have you looked at iDrive?www.joomlahostingreviews.com/online-back...e-backup-review.html

Another aspect to look at is time to restore. iBackup was much quicker on the restores for single files. Also it could take weeks to restore 50GB accorss the internet, this time frame may be okay, but if you needed the files quicker you want to make sure your backup provider has other solutions for a fast restore.

Hope this helps

There is nothing like "The Best Online Backup". You have to find one fits your needs.

Something to think when you pick one:

1. Easy to use.

2. Can you get your files back when you need them? most online backup services do well backing up your file. but when you lose your files and need your files back, you either couldn't do it or it takes long time and lots of time to download. At that time, it is already too late for you to know.

3 Real cost, don't believe in any "unlimited" myth, it is for PR only, First, you pay for each computer and your usage is capped by you drive size. second, your system files are not backed up. You have to have a rough idea how much you will actually backup then calculate on GB permonth cost base. You will find out that "unlimited" is not really cheap in most cases.

4. How long do you think the company can last? most startups can disappear and your files will disappear too. the better way is to backup to some well established online storage like Amazon S3.

Yes, I do agree with you. I have selected to use BackupandShare.com for the same concern. It is effective and provides us with unlimited backup space. Their customer support was very friendly and helpful. When my computer crashed, they answered all my questions and even walked me through the entire restore process of my backed up data online on a new PC.
BackupandShare.com gives you a good value to your money as you get additional windows mobile backup solution for free.
