SMS website down alerts 3 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
I was curious if anyone uses the SMS alerts for their website.

I come from a background of techsupport so have have had many system page me with problems. I have not set any of my websites to go to my phone.

What are some of the reasons tht people have SMS alerts set up?

What is the downtime threshhold that you have your alerts set at?

Thanks!

I use dotcom-monitor uptime monitoring service and I do use SMS alerts --- I set them as follows: if my site is down for 10 minutes, I get an SMS, but only on weekends and on weekdays in the evenings. Thus I don't receive messages at night and on weekdays (when I'm at work near my pc, I prefer phone alerts instead).

If you don't want to get messages at night, take care to set up alerting properly

I used to work for an outfit that used Nagios - Open source monitoring tool for linux. It's very powerful, well featured, and flexible, but it was at the time a bit complicated to get set up (this is more so because of the level of features it provides) Various warnings levels for specific items were easy to configure though. The SMS warnings can be a great feature but can get a bit annoying if something major is going wrong and you start getting a text from your server every minute or two.
